Certified Greenhouse Farmers considers sustainable farming practices integral to greenhouse growing. Agricultural water management, limiting pesticide use, minimizing packaging, recycling and environmental protection are all part of our business culture.
Certified Greenhouses are “the best of the best” in sustainable agriculture because:
Certified Greenhouse growers use water wisely. Computerized irrigation delivers water directly to the plant’s roots. This water is then recaptured, recycled, sterilized, and re-circulated multiple times.
Certified Greenhouse growers do not grow in soil and therefore do not use soil fumigants, which are under increased scrutiny for their negative impact on air quality.
The controlled atmosphere of greenhouses, combined with Integrated Pest Management using biological controls, predator insects and other methods, greatly reduces the need for pesticides. Instead, Certified Greenhouse growers focus on prevention of pests by keeping them out of greenhouses to begin with. Only after other treatment options are implemented are pesticides used.
Greenhouses can be used year-after-year without depleting soil quality for future generations.
Certified Greenhouse growers are socially responsible contributors to their local economies, providing year-round employment for thousands of people.
From packaging minimization to recycling of water, cardboard, leaves and more, greenhouses reduce waste through integrated waste management systems and recycling.
